.Zappa in New York (1978) El regreso triunfal a la Gran Manzana. Grabado durante una serie de conciertos legendarios en el Palladium de Nueva York en las Navidades de 1976, este doble LP es una fiesta absoluta. Cuenta con una banda irrepetible reforzada por la sección de vientos del programa de televisión Saturday Night Live (incluyendo a los hermanos Brecker) y la narración del locutor Don Pardo. Sleep Dirt (1979) El eslabón perdido de Hot Rats. El título original que Zappa quería para este álbum era Hot Rats III, y eso ya te dice qué tipo de sonido vas a encontrar aquí. Es un disco predominantemente instrumental (en su edición original en vinilo) grabado con bandas de formato pequeño a mediados de los 70. Destaca por su atmósfera orgánica, melódica y acústica. La canción homónima, "Sleep Dirt", es un bellísimo y limpio duelo de guitarras acústicas, mientras que temas como "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution" muestran un despliegue técnico de jazz-rock que te deja sin aliento. In the late 1970s, the relationship between Frank Zappa and his record label (Warner Bros.) imploded. Zappa delivered an ambitious four-vinyl project titled Läther, but the company refused to release it as a single album and decided to break the material up and release it as individual albums without the consent of the mustachioed genius. Despite the contractual chaos and Zappa's call for a boycott of these releases at the time, the music they contain is stratospheric. Let's review this cult trilogy.

Zappa in New York (1978) The triumphant return to the Big Apple. Recorded during a series of legendary concerts at the Palladium in New York during Christmas 1976, this double LP is an absolute celebration. It features an inimitable band, augmented by the horn section from the television program Saturday Night Live (including the Brecker brothers), and narration by radio personality Don Pardo. The album is famous for containing "The Black Page," an instrumental piece with a drum solo so devilishly complex that it became the ultimate test for any musician wishing to audition for Zappa.

Studio Tan (1978) Musical cartoons and prog-jazz. Released by Warner without Zappa's authorization and featuring a legendary cover by illustrator Gary Panter, this studio album is a wonderfully insane creation. Side A is entirely occupied by "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary," a suite of over 20 minutes that functions as the soundtrack to an avant-garde cartoon, brimming with sound effects and corporate satire. Side B balances the album with top-notch instrumental jazz-fusion pieces like "Revised Music for Guitar & Low-Budget Orchestra."

Sleep Dirt (1979) The missing link of Hot Rats. Zappa's original title for this album was Hot Rats III, and that already tells you what kind of sound you'll find here. It's a predominantly instrumental album (in its original vinyl edition) recorded with small bands in the mid-70s. It stands out for its organic, melodic, and acoustic atmosphere. The title track, "Sleep Dirt," is a beautiful and pristine duel of acoustic guitars, while tracks like "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution" showcase a breathtaking display of jazz-rock technique. Fun fact about the dispute: Zappa was so furious that Warner wasn't paying him royalties for these songs that in 1977 he went to a radio station in Pasadena, took the complete tapes of his original project Läther, and asked listeners to get their cassettes ready so he could record everything for free, live on air.
