Smile fue una banda de rock inglesa formada en 1968 por Brian May (guitarra) y Tim Staffell (voz y bajo). Ambos músicos formaron la banda cuando iban a la universidad. Como necesitaban un baterista pusieron avisos en la universidad y, luego de varias audiciones, Roger Taylor los convenció audicionando. Desde ahí se convertiría en el baterista oficial de Smile, y también en gran amigo de Brian May. El final de 1968 y la primera mitad de 1969 los pasaron dando diversos conciertos en lugares como el Imperial College o en Truro, de donde provenía Roger. Tocaron como teloneros de grupos como Pink Floyd, Yes y The Troggs. También actuaron en el Royal Albert Hall junto a Free, Joe Cocker y Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Smile was an English rock band formed in 1968 by Brian May (guitar) and Tim Staffell (vocals and bass). Both musicians formed the band when they were in college. As they needed a drummer, they put notices at the university and, after several auditions, Roger Taylor convinced them by auditioning. From there he would become the official drummer for Smile, and also a great friend of Brian May. The end of 1968 and the first half of 1969 were spent giving various concerts in places like Imperial College or in Truro, where Roger came from. They played as opening act for groups like Pink Floyd, Yes and The Troggs. They also performed at the Royal Albert Hall alongside Free, Joe Cocker and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The third track, "Doin' Alright", was written by Tim and Brian and later re-recorded by Queen for their debut album (although the song was renamed "Doing All Right" on it). In July 1969 they performed another concert in Truro, before entering the De Lane Lea Studios to record three new songs: "April Lady", "Polar Bear" and "Blag", the latter with the first glimpses of what would later become "Brighton Rock" from the Queen album Sheer Heart Attack. Smile played only two more concerts before Tim left the group in March 1970 to join the group Humpy Bong, as he said that going to universities and taverns would not amount to anything. This left the door for Freddie Mercury to join Brian and Roger and Queen was born, and within a year the definitive line-up was completed with the arrival of John Deacon. In 1982, 12 years after the disintegration of the group, a compilation of the 6 songs recorded by Smile was released on the Japanese market. In 2018, with the release of the Freddie Mercury biopic and his interaction with Queen; Bohemian Rhapsody, it was learned that Smile's stage would be reflected on the screen. Later, during post-production on the film, May, Taylor and Staffell met at Abbey Road Studios to re-record Doin' Alright. According to Staffell, Brian May was dissatisfied with the actor's portrayal of Staffell saying "I went to Abbey Road and dubbed some parts singing 'Doin' Alright'. We tried to make it sound more like Smile, and I think it worked. more aggressive, more raw, more like the sound of the time it was recorded, even though most of the tracks are from the Queen version."
